Reuse of existing structure / natural materials used in construction:

Caribbean Castaway’s property is very special.  The property is a level piece of land by St. Thomas standards, with 100 feet of coast line.  The stone cottage, 20 feet from the water’s edge is very unique to St. Thomas.  The local government no longer allows a structure so close to the water.  Since this was an existing cottage, its location was grandfathered. Using the existing footprint, we demolished the old cottage and constructed a new stone cottage using the same techniques as were used on the island several hundred years ago, using brick around the corners and window openings, stone for the walls and coral for filling the smaller openings.

This was an existing two bedroom house that was completely integrated into the new structure. The old house became what are now the master bedroom and bath, kitchen, dining room, media and great room with the outdoor porches with turquoise roof.

Safety:

The walls are either solid concrete or cinder block filled with concrete.  There was approximately 180 tons of concrete used to build this house.  It is built to withstand earthquakes.  The windows are thermally insulated and built to withstand Category 5, 150 mph, hurricane force winds.

Generates electricity:

Caribbean Castaway generates 8 kilowatts of energy through its solar panels mounted on the southern exposed roof.  This is enough energy to power the house during the day.

Collection of rain of water:

Water is a precious commodity on St. Thomas.  Drinking water is from rain.  For every inch of rain that falls, Caribbean Castaway captures 2800 gallons of water into its 70,000 gallon cisterns.  Even the rain that falls on the pool deck is captured in a grey water cistern to be used for irrigation.

Reuse of water:

The villa has its own sewage treatment plant.  The system treats sewage water and the water collected off the pool deck and treats it to grey water.  Nothing is wasted.

Provides refuge for local wildlife:

There are over 500 plants and bushes used in the landscaping.  All plants are designed to produce a burst of color throughout the entire year.  Birds, butterflies and frogs all enjoy this oasis on the east end of the island.

The property is also home to several iguanas who love to sunbath on the rocks.

The best snorkeling is right out front. Healthy reef life can be viewed in the crystal waters.
